Should the story of the adulteress at John 7:53-8:11 be in the Bible?

This is the story of the adulteress or the Pericope Adulterae. While this passage remains in most of the available translations, the Johannine authorship of the account is questioned in many of the footnotes. The TNIV and the NIV Update have even given italics to this passage to indicate doubt regarding the authenticity.
